ABSTRACT
In this project, a new deicing material called CeramSalt was designed, manufactured and tested. It is a composite made of ceramic (clay) with incorporated salt (NaCl) grains inside. CeramSalt was found to be more environmentally friendly than currently used rock salt, while providing a safe-to-walk surface in a few minutes after disposal, even at high ice thickness.
Due to its 4 times higher salt usage efficiency and reusability, it can be economically favorable to be used instead of rock salt, despite its cost being higher than rock salt. Especially in environmentally concerned places, regions with frequent and small snowfalls where it would have to be spread far less often, and private properties where a labor reduction is highly desired.
