ABSTRACT

A Manned Mars Mission is something that people have been thinking of for a long time. Currently, NASA and SpaceX are planning to realize this goal, and since it is a very demanding challenge, many different parts of the technical aspect of the mission have to be engineered. One of the most critical elements is the electrical energy storage system which properties and safety are crucial to mission success. In this paper, technologies currently used to perform similar tasks were examined in many aspects and compared to the Flywheel Technology.

Flywheel Technology was found to be the best possible solution for such demanding application due to its excellent energy storing properties, including specific energy a few times higher than in the current solutions, and very high reliability, which assure the safety of a Manned Mission to Mars.
